Upon the introduction of the redesigned Les Paul in 1961, there were six model variations available; Junior, Special, Standard, Custom, Double-12 (later, EDS) and the EB bass. In 1963, the new model was renamed "SG", which simply stood for "Solid Guitar". Since then, it has remained in continuous production and countless variations have been introduced and discontinued.

Since the creation of the Custom Shop in 1993, Gibson has had two separate model lines, the standard production USA line, and the Custom Shop line.

See Custom Orders for a list of one-off models produced for individuals before the introduction of the Made 2 Measure program.

Note: Please do not edit model years because your serial number dates to the year before introduction. Production starts several months before the new year for almost every model year.

Note on production numbers: Even if a model was only produced for a single year, that doesn't make it a limited run. Only limited runs have specified production limits, which will be stated in the corresponding model's page. Any model only produced for a single model year was produced at roughly the same rate as any other model produced that year.

Note: To help determine a fair value as a buyer or seller, I recommend taking the guitar's original selling price in Yen, putting it into this inflation calculator: (https://www.inflationtool.com/japanese-yen) and then converting to USD (in that order) to get an idea of what it might cost new today. Unless the guitar is rare, I generally consider anything above the original selling price to be too high.
